A Whole New World Of Style And Excellence

Chile has vast differences in climate; here is a country that stretches more than 4,300 km in length; conditions range from an arid desert in the far north to the cold of Tierra del Fuego in the far south at 54 degrees latitude south (next stop is Antarctica).

The entire country’s narrow strip is flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes Mountains to the East, separating Chile from Argentina. The cool breezes from east and west help moderate temperatures, rendering a climate that is never too hot, an ideal condition for growing grapes. This means that while Cabernet Sauvignon performs beautifully in warmer areas such as the Colchagua, Cachapoal and Maipo Valleys, they have cooler districts such as the LimarĂ and Casablanca Valleys that are ideal for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah.

The French were excited by the prospects of Chile’s ideal climate and soils for fine wines and invested in the region early on. Their influence shaped Chile’s wine market towards a focus on Bordeaux varieties like Merlot and Cabernet, focusing heavily on exports. Then in the 1990s, it was discovered that much of the country’s Merlot was actually a nearly extinct variety called Carménère. Chile suddenly had its own unique wine. The renaissance of the French varietals in Chile can be tasted in many of the new terroir-focused wines being produced in new regions by gifted winemakers.

Chilean wines have attracted many famous fans in the wine trade today. Tim Atkin being one of the faithful. Atkin is a London-based Master of Wine. He first visited Chile in 1989 and has made annual prilgrimage returns to write his special report on the latest trends and best wines of the year; his 2018 report contains reviews of more than 1000 wines, as well as his thoughts on regional terroir, as he explains how Chilean growers and producers are starting to match up particular varieties with specific areas.

LimarĂ Valley (Coquimbo Region)

LimarĂ Valley is known for being the origin of great Chardonnays, where the variety finds the perfect terroir to express its potential. In recent years, in addition to this variety traditionally from the region, Pinot Noir has emerged as a great ally that has slowly established this origin not only as a producer of white wines, but also fresh top quality reds.

“After discovering the potential of the Limarí Valley and conducting research for years, Marcelo Papa continues to work day after day to demonstrate that this is the perfect place for the production of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.”

  • SOILS: Alluvial y colluvial. Red clay on the surface and calcium carbonate in the subsoil. Excellent drainage.

  • CLIMATE: Coastal. Cool coastal breezes blow directly into the valley and moderate the temperatures, and this, along with the typical cloudy mornings and the indirect light on the grapes during much of the day, enables the grapes to ripen slowly and ultimately results in fresher wines.

The LimarĂ Valley

The LimarĂ Valley is a lowland cool coastal area best suited to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir growth.

LimarĂ Valley is one of the northernmost winegrowing regions in Chile, located 320km north of the Chilean capital, Santiago.

Chardonnay is the obvious star grape variety in LimarĂ Valley wines, producing wines with a certain minerality thanks to the relatively cool climate and the limestone content in the soil.

Maipo Valley (Central Valley Region)

Maipo Valley is one of Chile's most important wine-producing regions. Located just south of the capital, Santiago, Maipo Valley is home to some of the country's most prestigious wines. It is often described as the 'Bordeaux of South America', and rich, fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon is undoubtedly its most celebrated wine style.

Maipo is at the very northern end of Chile's extensive Central Valley, running from just north of the Rapel Valley up to where the countryside begins to give way to houses and roads in the southern suburbs of Santiago.

Alto Maipo which encompasses the sub-regions of Puente Alto and Pirque, is the most prestigious of Maipo's viticultural areas.

“Maipo is a unique, exceptional place. The influence of the Andes Mountains and the composition of its soils makes this valley a place with tremendous potential for producing high-quality wines.”

  • SOILS: Associated with fluvial terraces. Alluvial, stony, poor in nutrients, and highly permeable.

  • CLIMATE: Semi-arid Mediterranean and strongly influenced by the Andes Mountains. This is the coldest part of the Maipo Valley. Its pronounced daily temperature oscillation of approximately 18ÂşC prolongs the ripening period of the grapes, concentrating and intensifying their aromas.

Puente Alto: A World Class Terroir

The El Mariscal Viña Concha y Toro Vineyard has an altitude of 650 metres above sea level, in the foothills of the Andes and along the northern bank of the Maipo River. Recognised as one of the world’s finest terroirs, Puente Alto is a symbol not only for Concha y Toro, but for Chilean viticulture as well. As a result of rocky, nutrient poor soil, the plants are well balanced and produce small bunches with concentrated colour and tannins, delivering expressive wines with good body, ripe texture and excellent balance.

The vineyard is located in the coldest region of the Maipo valley, with a variation of around 18 degrees centigrade between daily high and low temperatures. This leads to a longer grape maturation time and a concentration and intensification of their aromas.

Cachapoal Valley (Central Valley Region)

The soils of western Cachapoal are more fertile loam, which local winemakers say is ideal for growing Chile's icon variety, Carmenere. The conditions here are most suited as Carmenere is a late ripening variety, it needs high levels of sunshine and a warm summer to reach its full potential. Here in Cachapoal Valley, it can produce fine, deeply coloured red wines, with the attractive meaty plumpness of Merlot and the gently herbaceous, cedary notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

One of Chile's up-and-coming wine districts, Peumo, is located in Cachapoal Valley. Peumo wines now include some of the country's finest Carmenere wines. .

"The Peumo vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley is recognized as one of the best places in Chile for producing Carmenere.”

  • SOILS: Associated with the riverbed. Deep, alluvial, and silty-clay.

  • CLIMATE: Mediterranean with an average daily temperature oscillation of 19ÂşC and strongly influenced by the Cachapoal River and Rapel Lake.

Cachapoal Valley

The Cachapoal Valley

Peumo: The Cradle of Carmenere

Being the birthplace of internationally renowned Carmenere wines, the Peumo vineyard –in Cachapoal Valley- has defended its position as one of the most ideal places for the production of this variety, both in Chile and worldwide.

Peumo is a privileged place for growing Carmenere. Its moderate temperatures, warm days and cooler nights, result in an optimum microclimate for this variety.

Peumo is part of a longitudinal valley, that is, one where the Coastal Range is parallel to the Andes. Therefore, this vineyard is protected from the influence of the Andes and, because it is also a narrow valley, it receives the influence of the winds that originate in the Cachapoal River. All this creates a microclimate in Peumo that prevents frosts from occurring in spring and hardly occurring in winter, setting an ideal place for Carmenere, as it is a very delicate variety when it comes to low temperatures.

The climate factor at the Peumo vineyard is very important because it is what allows Carmenere to properly develop during ripening time. In this variety, suitable alcoholic content in the fruit and optimum tannin maturity are attained at different times, so the weather should be one that allows the grapes to remain long enough in the vine to achieve adequate maturity.

Chardonnay

FULL-BODIED WHITE WINE. Richness, Elegance and Vitality

The cooler Costa areas is where you’ll find the best Chardonnay. The outer regions of LimarĂ Valley where this wine comes from offer the most minerality and are uniquely salty. It cuts into the unique buttery style from oak aging and complements extremely well. There was never any doubt that Chardonnay would grow very well in LimarĂ, given the characteristics of its soil and climate. The Humboldt current makes Chile’s beaches the coldest in South America. It acts like a gigantic swamp cooler for growing grapes. Vineyards receive a protective blanket of fog almost every single day. For cool-climate grapes like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc, this is ideal!

Tasting Notes:

The colour is a pale, glossy yellow. Its aromas include ripe white fruit aromas such as pear, white flowers, toasted hazelnut, and mineral notes. Slightly thick with a silky texture and layers of ripe fig, pear, and mineral flavours. Finishes with a long, vibrant character.

Pinot Noir

LIGHT-BODIED RED WINE. Exuberant, Subtle and Delicate

Pinot Noir is a delicate variety that requires cool conditions and relatively low humidity during maturity, which is highly favoured by clays and carbonates in the soils, natural conditions in LimarĂ. Vinification is also delicate, with pre-fermentative cold maceration and short fermentative macerations, trying to make a very gentle and respectful extraction of tannins from its skins and seeds. When this process is properly done, along with timely harvest and careful aging of the wine, it produces a very fruity, fresh and soft wine on the palate. It’s like a Chardonnay, but red. Chilean Pinot Noir exudes flavours of fresh, macerated berries with subtle woodsy notes, often from judicious oaking.

Tasting Notes:

Bright and delicate red. It shows concentrated notes of cherry and raspberry. A refined texture with red fruit and licorice flavours, with a notable structure.

Carmenere

MEDIUM-BODIED RED WINE. Classic Profile

You pronounce Carmenere like car + men + nair. In France, it carries the accent marks: Carménère. In Chile, it goes by Carmenere. Carmenere is a half-sibling with Cabernet Sauvignon, sharing Cabernet Franc as a common parent. This little black grape sits in the shadow of its more famous half-sibling, but deserves a place in your cellar if you love bold, brawny Cabernet. Carmenere’s direct relation to Cabernet Franc gives its red fruit flavours and herbaceousness. At the moment, the best wines are found in and around Colchagua, Cachapoal, and Maipo Valleys where wines are richer and more chocolatey. Carménère in Médoc, France was mostly extinct due to phylloxera in the 1860s but its successful rediscovery and proliferation in Chile is something you should not miss.

Tasting Notes

Deep violet red. An intense, pure Carmenere, packed with blueberries and wild berries. Floral hints like violets and a pinch of roast red pepper. Fruity and flavourful with delicious acidity, sweet, friendly tannins and a long, creamy finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon

FULL-BODIED RED WINE. Concentrated flavours, Firm tannins

The most planted wine grape of Chile is known for producing more elegant and herbal styles of Cabernet. That said, the regions of Apaltagua, Maipo, and Colchagua show outstanding potential and produce wines with richness, similar to fine Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes

Deep red with lush cherry, black currant, and blackberry aromas with a touch of tar and smoke. The texture is smooth—almost silky—and masks the firm tannic structure that lies below and only appears on the lingering finish.

Blend

FULL-BODIED RED WINE. Silky smooth texture, Firm tannic structure.

Literally translating as black label or black tie, this top-of-the-line vintage faithfully expresses Chile’s Puente Alto terroir with tremendous elegance and complexity.

The Etiqueta Negra 2018, is comprised of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. The Cabernet Sauvignon delivers structure, the Cabernet Franc a fruity character, and the Petit Verdot lends complexity. The blend was aged in French oak barrels for 16 months, resulting in a wine with firm tannins, well-integrated oak, and tremendous body, character and balance.

The 2018 Etiqueta Negra Vintage is an extremely heavy-bodied wine that has a very strong fruity scent that leaves a very intense finish to the palete when sipped. Due to the large amount of Cabernet Sauvignon used in this particular blend, Etiqueta Negra pairs well with red or game meats, grilled or cooked in stews with strong-flavoured sauces and a touch of acidity as well as earthy herbs such as rosemary, thyme and bay leaf.

Tasting Notes

Deep, dark red. Unctuous flavours of cherry, black currant, cedar, blackberry, black tar, plus some smoke presence. The wine shows deep flavours strengthened by firm tannins. The palate has a smooth, almost silky texture and tremendous concentration framed by firm tannins that lead to a long and complex finish.
