About WINESSELL

Felix Bonet is a Spanish entrepreneur who has great passion for Wines. He is WSET accredited and possesses compendious knowledge in the field.

His affection for food & wines started some 30 years ago when he apprenticed in a gourmet products store in Andorra. In those years he was inculcated with an intense attitude for the love of Wines by his boss. And through six years of arduous training in rigor, he emerged a national wine and food distributor in Andorra.

He grew and transitioned from retailer to wholesaler, embarking on an international journey to share his love and passion for wines. Through his relentless thirst for knowledge and all those years of labour, it prepared him adequately to launch a project to promote Spanish wine in Southeast Asia. In the search for distributors and foster a good commercial link, he end up relocating to Singapore, in order to better serve customers and organise promotional events for those wines. Check out his online store for great wines at great prices by clicking “Learn More”.

Come meet this extraordinary self-made man at New Ubin Seafood this 30th July and be embraced by his natural gregariousness and vigor. Fall absolutely in Love and have an amicable affair with Spanish Wines.

Wine Regions of Spain

Featured Spanish Wine regions

From the Atlantic to Mediterranean

Spain enjoys a fascinating and diverse landscape, with both Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, dry plateaus, and the Pyrenees mountains. Every one of Spain’s regions produce wine. In this edition of Truly Singaporean Makan & Minum: A Spanish Affair, we focus on wines representing notable Spanish regions in the northeast to northwest belt of the Iberian peninsular. A grape crop’s phenotype is affected by the geological factors, including unique environmental contexts, farming practices and a crop's specific growth habitat. So different terriors of the region can produce very distinctive tastes even from the same grape varietal.

A Spanish Love Affair:

Featuring wines of notable Spanish regions

North West Spain

The Northwest region is much cooler than the rest of the Spain due to the Atlantic sea influence. Rías Baixas (Rhee-yus By-shus) is one of the coolest, specializing in zesty whites and lean, elegant reds. A specific type of white wine, Albariño, originated here in the Rías Baixas now takes up 90% of the wine produced in this region. This wine is especially successful because this grape varietal that are grown here are able to withstand and even thrive in the moist, coastal, climate.

RĂas Baixas - Coast to the west of Galicia, Spain, featuring various rias, bays and islands with Vineyards near water edge.

Bierzo is a wine region in the northwest of Castilla y Leon, close to the region's borders with Galicia (to the west) and Asturias to the north. The Bierzo viticulture region was accorded DO status in 1989.

Bierzo's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean has a profound effect on its overall climate, with average temperatures during the growing season much cooler than in Castilla y Leon's more inland areas, making it rather mild. Average rainfall is around 28 inches (720mm). Nevertheless, the Cordillera CantĂĄbrica mountain range in the north provides the vineyards with adequate shelter, ensuring that the local Mencia grapes achieve optimum ripeness to produce lively, fruity and often intense red wines.

Las MĂ©dulas

Las MĂ©dulas is a historic gold-mining site near the town of Ponferrada in the comarca of El Bierzo ( province of LeĂłn, Castile and LeĂłn, Spain )

North Central Spain

One of Spain’s genuinely legendary winemaking regions, the pristinely rural Ribera de Duero in North central Spain, is home to some of the world’s best and most exclusive red wines. Laid out on a sprawling plateau along the Duero river banks, just 120km north of Madrid, Ribera del Duero is a land of extremes. Biting winters, sun-bleached summers, and high altitudes work hand-in-hand with clayey, silty, and limestone soils to create the ideal conditions for Tinto Fino(the local name for Tempranillo). The Ebro and Douro River Valleys are very famous for Tempranillo wines. Wines produced in the Ribera del Duero DO derive almost exclusively from these red grapes. The vast majority of production is dedicated to Tinto Fino, the dominant red varietal in the northern half of the Spanish peninsula.

Castillo de Peñafiel

Castillo de Peñafiel is a medieval fortress that was declared a National Monument in 1917 and today it has become an emblem for the enotourism of the Ribera del Duero.

Rioja(Wree-yo-ha) is another important wine region in North Central Spain, with denominación de origen calificada (D.O.Ca., "Qualified Designation of Origin," the highest category in Spanish wine regulation). Rioja wine is made from grapes grown in the autonomous communities of La Rioja and Navarre, and the Basque province of Álava. Rioja is further subdivided into three zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Oriental and Rioja Alavesa. Many wines have traditionally blended fruit from all three regions, though there is a slow growth in single-zone wines.

The Castle of Clavijo, one of the most famous in the area of La Rioja, Spain, is located on top of an imposing rock, dominating the surrounding land in the municipality of the same name in La Rioja, 15 km from the capital, Logroño

North East Spain

Catalonia - Northeastern Spain can be split into two major zones: the Ebro river watershed and the coastal hills that run from Tarragona to the Spanish border. The Ebro River valley is famous for its robust, fruity reds and rosés of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Carignan. The coastal hills produce Cava and elegant, mineral-laced red blends which often include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot.

Panta dels Guiamets

Pantà dels Guiamets is a Reservoir of the Ebro river basin in DO Monstant, Capçanes district.

Terra Alta is a Spanish Protected Designation of Origin located at the west of the province of Tarragona in Catalonia, between the Ebro river and Aragón border. The rolling hills of Terra Alta are home to both longstanding cooperatives and upstart wineries, cultivating both native and international grape varieties. Together with Alella, Conca de Barberà, Empordà, Penedùs, Priorat and Tarragona, it is one of the seven historical appellations of origin in Catalonia. The uniqueness of “Terra Alta” is due to the “Mediterranean inland” condition in the wine-growing terroir, the predominance of traditional varieties and the existence of a wine-growing culture with its own identity.

Terra Alta DO

Grenache (Garnacha) is vital to the region, with red Grenache representing 26% of the total production and white Grenache representing 20%. While red wines are important and of high quality, this region has been recognised for the unique white Grenache since the 19th century and includes 30% of the world’s white Garnacha.

AucalĂ  2020 White D.O. Terra Alta

AucalĂ  2020 White D.O. Terra Alta (100% White Grenache)

MEDIUM-BODIED WHITE WINE

White Grenache (Garnacha)

This variety corresponds to a mutation of the red grenache (Garnacha tinta), which is why it shares some characteristics: it is sensitive to humid soils, very resistant to droughts and, to a lesser extent, wind.

White Grenache wines are medium bodied, have a greenish-yellow color and medium-high acidity, which makes it an ideal variety for both monovarietal wines and for blends. Its aromatic intensity is medium and has floral, herbaceous and fruity notes. They have a high alcohol content and are sensitive to oxidation.

RIPE WHITE FRUIT, MINERALS

Serra i BarcelĂł

The winery is a project by Josep Serra , the fourth generation of a family of winegrowers and oenologists from the Ribera del Ebro , with more than 20 years of experience in the area producing wines.

It was in 2001 when Josep bought a very old vineyard located in the upper part of the Capçanes district, within the DO Montsant; a three-hectare estate where he began his interpretation of the native varieties of this area, Garnacha Tinta , Garnacha Peluda and Samsó (Cariñena).

The objective of the Serra i BarcelĂł winery is to carry out respectful and non-interventionist viticulture, taking advantage of the natural conditions of the area and the age of the vines.

With these values, in 2013 Celler Serra i BarcelĂł expands to DO Terra Alta to start a new experience with Garnacha Blanca and Garnacha Tinta planted on limestone soils in the AucalĂ  area.

The Serra i BarcelĂł winery follows its philosophy based on the production of unique wines with native varieties and limited production.

Bodega Davide

Founded in 1902 by the great-great grandfather of the current owners, Bodega Davide is a fine example of family continuity in the world of wine. Since its very inception, and during its 100-plus years of history, this Galician winery has been committed to quality.

In 2003, the Davide winery started a new chapter, building a modern facility on top of the old family house and redefining its overall approach to viticulture and winemaking. The rethinking process resulted in a set of practices labelled as “reflective viticulture”, which is based on principles of environmental sustainability and low intervention.

Situated in Val do Salnés, a subzone of DO Rías Baixas, the Davide vineyards have poor soils composed of sand and loam and peppered with marine fossils. The area has a maritime climate, strongly influenced by the Arousa river and by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The winery grows the typical white varieties of the area. Albariño is the dominant one, followed by the increasingly prestigious Godello. As for vineyard management, it is aimed at capturing the particular expression of each parcel of vines.

The head winemaker of Bodega Davide is Mr. Pablo Estévez, who was chosen Spain's "Best Young Wines Winemaker" in 2019.
