The Wineries

Bodegas Manzanos

The history of Manzanos Wines is the story of a family, their effort, their perseverance and their know-how. The Fernández de Manzanos have been cultivating vineyards and producing wines for more than a century.

It was exactly in 1890 when the first generation of the Fernández de Manzanos family established a small winery in Azagra with a capacity of 50,000 litres of wine.

In the 40’s they inaugurated a new facility which further increased its capacity to 350,000 litres, emphasizing the value of the viticultural tradition of this area. Between the 50’s and 60’s, they consolidated their project with the creation of Bodegas Viña Marichalar, the first one belonging to the appellation Rioja, which exceeds 1.5 million litres in capacity.

In the 90s, Víctor Fernández de Manzanos Pastor, from the fourth family generation, joined the family business after studying Chemical Engineering and obtaining a Master’s Degree in Viticulture and Enology by the Technical School of Agronomic Engineering from Madrid Polytechnical University. Víctor is the first member of the family with training in viticulture and enology.

Víctor then built the Winery Marqués de Butrago and decided to perform his life project, the construction of Bodegas Manzanos Azagra.

Nowadays, the public faces of Bodegas Manzanos are those of the brothers Víctor, and David Fernández de Manzanos, as well as Laura Mateo, wife of the former. In 2010, these young entrepreneurs took the reins of the winery to turn Bodegas Manzanos into a prosperous business, modern and endowed with the latest technologies in the field. A business that has managed to preserve the old flavor of tradition and the received legacy.

Manzanos Winery

Siglo’s vineyards. A Brand that is now part of Bodegas Manzanos.

Siglo

Its origin dates back to 1927 in AGE, one of the historic wineries of appellation Rioja being the oldest winery in Fuenmayor. At that time, the winery was referred to as “small warehouse”. Siglo brand pays tribute to the XVIII century where people used to carry the wine.

Nowadays Siglo continues this tradition inherited from winemaking families in collaboration with Asprodema, an NGO that promotes people with learning disabilities that handmade put the sack in the bottle.

The sack is the most characteristic thing about Siglo and maybe is one of the reasons why our brand has become such an undeniable referent in Rioja. We can all remember “the wine of the sack”.

The sack was born out of the need to keep the wine fresh. And with this principle we continue to elaborate the sack.

Although their wine is elaborated in Rioja, it is transported to nearly a hundred countries around the world and they want to be sure that the wine arrives as it was conceived, without being altered by any change of temperature during the journey and storage.

The sack protects the wine from the changes of temperature and light, it emulates the ageing process in the winery, where we maintain a constant temperature of 12 degrees Celsius throughout the year and a low light to make sure that the wine sleeps in the dark, as it is best for its perfect evolution.

Because of the general discomfort that was felt before the Spanish Civil War, Felix Azpilicueta Martínez, founder and only owner of the winery at that time, decided to keep and hide a collection from bottles of an excellent harvest in Rioja: that of 1928. Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) meant a halt in the expansive plans of the winery. It was not until the war was finished that the emblem of the winery was born: Siglo Sack Crianza.
