About Brigaldara
Brigaldara has a rich history spanning a thousand years , all housed under 120 hectares of property - 47 of which are planted with vines - distributed in three different areas of Verona: Valpolicella Classica, Valpantena and Eastern Valpolicella. A historic family, the Cesari, that has owned the villa and the surrounding land since 1928, who is committed to the enhancement of a rich and heterogeneous property. A team of young winemakers and agronomists dedicated to the study and customization of each intervention in the vineyard, to enhance the terroirs and microterroirs that make up the different souls of the wines that are here produced.
The incredible richness and variety of the vineyards, the soils, the climate, the altitude and the morphological characteristics of the land create a rural heritage that surpasses viticulture and includes it within a lively and complex ecosystem, consisting of terroirs and microterroirs, that are each suited to a particular expression of both Amarone and Valpolicella.
Wine Region of Verona
The region of Verona in Italia is a famous and very important wine producung region.
Winemaking in the region has existed since at least the time of the ancient Greeks. The name "Valpolicella" appeared in charters of the mid-12th century, combining two valleys previously thought of independently. Its etymology is likely from the Latin vallis pulicellae ("valley of river deposits"). Today Valpolicella's economy is heavily based on wine production. The region, colloquially called the "pearl of Verona", has also been a preferred location for rural vacation villas. The Valpolicella production zone was enlarged to include regions of the surrounding plains when Valpolicella achieved DOC status in 1968. In December 2009, the production of Amarone and recioto dessert wines within the Valpolicella DOC received their own higher and prestiged separate Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status.
Northeastern Italian region of Soave is centered mostly on the city of Verona. A Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) zone and, since 2001, a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation known as Soave Superiore are both located within the Soave region. Both zones are further divided into a general and Classico designation for the wines made in the Soave region's central region, which is centered on the sloping vineyards of Verona.
GARGANEGA - The Refreshing SOAVE
Garganega is the dominant grape variety in the Soave producing zone, however Trebbiano di Soave and Chardonnay are allowed in different amounts. While the majority of Soave is dry, sparkling spumante and passito Recioto styles are allowed in still wine within the DOC zone. In 1998, the passito Recioto style received its own DOCG label for grapes cultivated in the mountainous area.
The mists that flow from the Po Valley in the fall affect the temperature of the Soave area and might bring viticultural dangers like mold and other grape illnesses. The Garganega grape, which makes up the majority of Soave, ripens late and has a thick skin that makes it more resistant to mist than certain grapes with thinner skin, such Trebbiano Toscano. Ganganega is a higher quality grape varietal and in order to qualify for DOC or DOCG status, the production must use a minimium of 70% Ganganega for Soave.
AMARONE - The GREAT Valpolicella Blend
Maybe you've wondered what makes this pricey wine "Amarone Della Valpolicella" so exceptional when you've seen it lying at the bottom of wine lists. Despite the fact that many wines have exorbitant costs, in this instance you receive exactly what you paid for.
Amarone, a really potent, full-bodied wine produced in one of Italy's premier wine-producing areas is termed “THE KING OF VALPOLICELLA”.
To give Amarone Della Valpolicella its distinctive substantial body and rich flavour, many steps must be taken. Amarone grapes are harvested later in the season than those used to make other Valpolicella wines in order to assure optimal maturity, often around mid-October. They are then allowed to dry out throughout the course of the winter, losing 30–40% of their original weight.
As a result, substantially more fruit—with a much greater concentration of sugar—is added to one bottle of Amarone than to a typical wine. The wine is then matured in oak barrels for two to five years after the grapes have been crushed and fermented for more than 45 days.
THREE native red-wine grape varietals produced in northeastern Italy's Veneto area form the foundation of the Valpolicella Blend. The grapes Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella make up the majority of the Valpolicella DOC, but it is also possible to make the case that the technique of production, which involves semi-drying the grape berries to create Amarone, is just as significant.
Corvina plays a prominent part (45 to 95 percent) in the various levels of Valpolicella red wine and is recognized as the blend's lynchpin, but the precise quantities utilized are ultimately up to the winery. Corvina produces light-colored wine that occasionally resembles the Gamay variety of Beaujolais and is known more for its acidity and sour-cherry flavors than for its depth.
The Corvinone grape, once believed to be a clone of Corvina but now recognised as a different, distantly related grape variety, is permitted to supply up to 50% of the wine, substituting for a portion of Corvina's allocation.
The herbaceous notes of Rondinella, which is primarily utilised to provide the blend colour and body, highlight the mild spice of Corvina. Up to 30% of the mix may be made up of it.
This Valpolicella Blend is most commonly used to produce the famous dry Amarones, where the appassimento method of semi-drying grapes is used to craft rich, and often sweet, wines of great concentration. Corvina and Rondinella grapes are favoured in this instance because of their thick skins – making them better suited to drying – and opulent texture. Winemakers have the choice of fermenting their Amarone wines as sweet (Recioto) or dry.

The particular selection made on the grapes from this vineyard derives from the unique soil and climatic conditions that characterise it. The perfect exposure and altitude allow a slow and gradual maturation of the grapes. The Guyot farming-system adopted allows a perfect exposure of the bunches and an optimal vegetative-productive development. The different time of harvest within Case Vecie, compared to other vineyards, lets the grapes to rest in a cold time of year and lead to a slower and prolonged drying process. During the drying-phase the grapes have the opportunity to develop the characteristic aromas, then released during winemaking: the resulting Amarone fully reflects the basis of these conditions, gaining structure and complexity along with a distinctive aromatic bouquet.
