ABOUT THE WINERY AND REGIONS

CHAMPAGNE

The House of Lancelot Pienne

The vineyard lies in Cramant, in the heart of the Champagne region. The estate covers 8.30 hectares of vines. Their plots are cultivated on the terroirs of both the Côte des Blancs and the Marne Valley.

Their dedication combined with the expertise handed down over the generations and a passion for the land, the vines and the craft of the vigneron give them control and perfect mastery over the cultivation of their vines and the harvesting of the grapes. Their land parcels being spread over a wide area require special care and ensure a great variety of character to their vines, offering a wide palette of aromas and flavours when it comes to blending the cuvées. This great variety enables them to maintain the style of Lancelot-Pienne champagnes.

BURGUNDY

AF GROS - Presentation of the domain

Domaine AF GROS is an estate located in Burgundy, in Pommard, which was founded by Anne-Françoise GROS. The creation of the Domaine dates back to 1988.

François PARENT, originally from Pommard, is Anne-Françoise's husband. He has been the winemaker of the Domaine's wines since its creation. Its know-how and reputation are recognized worldwide and its wines are a perfect expression of Pinot Noir, a unique combination of elegance and depth. Today, two of their three children work on the Estate, Caroline and Mathias. The brother and the sister share the wine-making, and the other the management, the development and the marketing of the wines of the Domain.

After retirement in 1996, Jean and Jeanine Gros divided the family Domaine (Domaine Jean Gros) between their three children Michel, Bernard and Anne-Françoise. Domaine A.F (Anne-Françoise) Gros consists of Anne’s share of Domaine Jean Gros, additional properties in and around Vosne-Romanée which she has bought or leased, and her husband’s share of Domaine Parent. Although based in Pommard, the wines of AF Gros have been produced from the same premises in Beaune since 1998.

Assisted by their children Caroline and Mathieu, this Domaine has been using a sorting table since 2008, after which the grapes are destemmed but not crushed. The grapes are given a short cool maceration, then fermented with more pumping over than punching down. The juice is then sometimes concentrated by a similar machine to that used by Anne’s brothers Michel and Bernard Gros, (however only if necessary).

Each Gros Domaine is autonomous and independent; Domaine Michel Gros in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Gros Frère & Soeur directed by Bernard in Vosne Romanée, and Domaine Anne-Françoise Gros in Pommard).

Her labels sport the outline of a female head, each one different according to the stylistic interpretation of the appellation by Anne-Françoise and the artist.

CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE

DOMAINE DE LA JANASSE - A Châteauneuf-du-Pape story

Aimé, the founder

In 1967, Aimé Sabon came back from his military service. He took over his father’s vines, who used to take his grapes to the wine cooperative.

In 1973, Aimé built his own cellar. Domaine de la Janasse was born and named after the family farm that was in Courthézon, in the locality of “La Janasse”. Aimé was ambitious. He knew he had fabulous soil and he wanted to expand the estate by acquiring new plots. From 15 hectares at the very beginning, La Janasse has now reached more than 90 hectares.

From father to children

In 1991, after a technical diploma in viticulture and oenology in Beaune, and another one in marketing in Mâcon, Christophe Sabon –Aimé’s eldest son– came back to La Janasse where he was given the keys to the cellar. From then different cuvees were developed, new markets conquered. In 2001, Isabelle –Aimé’s daughter– graduated as an oenologist from the University of Toulouse, and joined the team. With Hélène, Aimé’s wife, the family was reunited again in La Janasse.

The good grape in the right place

Due to its fragmented structure -more than sixty plots- the area of La Janasse covers a mosaic of terroirs. Thorough research on soil, exposure and microclimates helped to ideally organize the vineyard. White varieties and syrahs were preferably planted on sandy limestones, exposed eastward of the appellation in order to preserve freshness, acidity and fineness. Mourvedres were planted on clay-limestone soils covered with river rocks so as to reach perfect maturity.

The geographical scattering of different parcels brings great complexity to blending. It also legitimizes special cuvees like Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and terre de Bussières. For example, we produce Chaupin and Les Garrigues –100% grenache wines– as we are convinced that grenache reaches its full expression on cooler northern soils. On southern soils, generosity of the grenache must be balanced with mourvèdre and syrah.

BORDEAUX

CHÂTEAU HAUT-SIMARD - A CUMULATION OF TALENTS

SAINT-ÉMILION AND SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU APPELLATIONS ARE GEOGRAPHICALLY INTERTWINED

The appellation areas include the territories of a dream-like list of nine villages or towns. The first is Saint-Émilion, which has been the epicentre of the winegrowing area since the monks arrived in the 8th century. The villages of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes,Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Pey-d’Armens, Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens and Vignonet complete the picture with parts of the town of Libourne.

Château Simard History, Overview

Château Simard is owned by the Vauthier family, who are well-known for the legendary Saint-Émilion estate, Château Ausone, as well as counting Château Fonbel and Château Moulin St. Georges and Château La Clotte as part of their holdings.

Château Simard has a long history in the region that dates back to at least the 1700’s The actual Château was built in the 18th century. The property takes its name from one of its previous owners, Count Simard.

Stepping back to 1870, in those days, Château Simard was a much larger vineyard. In an effort to expand the wine trade in St.-Émilion, to help in the shipping of their wine, a railroad was established that runs through the bottom of the Saint-Émilion appellation.

However, the tracks were placed right in the middle of the Simard vineyard, cutting it in half. At that time, it was thought that the best idea was to make lemonade out of lemons, so a new wine was created out of the now, split vineyard, Château Haut-Simard.

Château Simard was purchased by the Maziere family in the 1920’s. Today, the estate is owned by Alain Vauthier, a direct descendant of Claude Maziere, who managed Château Simard since 1954. Alain Vauthier manages Château Simard and Château Haut-Simard with the able assistance of his daughter, Pauline Vauthier.

Château Simard Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking

The 48 hectare, Right Bank vineyard of Château Haut Simard is in reality two separate parcels. The larger 40 hectare parcel used for Simard is planted to 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc. The remaining 8 hectares are reserved for Château Haut Simard, which is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Both terroirs have clay, sand and gravel soils. On average, the vines are 20 years of age. The vines are planted to an average vine density that ranges from 5,500 vines per hectare to 12,600 vines per hectare.

The plantings with the higher levels of vine density are found in the most recent plantings. The wines are vinified in traditional concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels.

Château Haut-Simard is aged in 50% new, French oak barrels for an average of 12 months before bottling.

Château Simard has a completely different aging process as the wine does not see any new oak for the aging. Instead, the wine of Château Simard is aged in concrete vats.
