Wolfburn Distillery’s Location

Thurso is the northernmost town on the British mainland, with a rich history tracing back to Viking times when it served as a pivotal link to Scandinavia and the Northern Isles under Norse Orcadian rule. In 1821, William Smith established the first distillery in Thurso, aptly named Wolfburn after its water source. Constructed from sturdy Caithness flagstone, remnants of its foundation still endure today. Smith's substantial investment propelled Wolfburn into prominence, earning it the distinction of being the largest distillery in Caithness according to tax records from the early 19th century. Although ownership remained within the Smith family until at least the 1850s, production eventually ceased.

Resurrecting Wolfburn in the 21st century was akin to an archaeological endeavor rather than a mere revival. Little remained of the original site save for a mound of stones. The modern Wolfburn Distillery now stands a short distance from the original location, utilizing the same pristine water source from the burn.

Crafting Wolfburn

The smooth and warming flavor of Wolfburn whisky is a result of the deliberate approach taken in its production. Extended fermentation periods are followed by gentle distillation, and the spirit is then aged in high-quality oak casks within our dark and cool warehouses. This meticulous process allows the whisky to mature gracefully, resulting in a world-class single malt renowned for its exceptional quality and depth of flavor.
