Tuscany & Mount Edna’s Viticulture
Tuscany and Mount Etna are among Italy's most revered wine regions, celebrated for their distinctive terroirs, grape varieties, and the renowned wines they produce. Tuscany, located in central Italy, is home to classic wines like Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Super Tuscans. The region's rolling hills are characterised by a mix of clay-limestone soils and a Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool nights that allow grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity. Sangiovese, Tuscany’s most famous grape, thrives here, producing wines with structured tannins, bright acidity, and a combination of red fruit and earthy flavours.
Mount Etna, on the southern Italian island of Silicy, offers a unique viticultural landscape due to its active volcanic soil, which imparts mineral-rich qualities to the wines. The black soil slopes of Mount Etna experience a high-altitude Mediterranean climate, where indigenous grapes like Nerello Mascalese and Carricante grow on terraced vineyards. This results in wines with pronounced minerality, balanced acidity, and complex flavours, often showing fresh red fruit, herbal, and smoky notes. Together, Tuscany and Mount Etna showcase Italy's vast wine diversity, each region adding its distinct character to the country's renowned viticultural heritage.
