The GlenAllachie distillery in Speyside

The GlenAllachie Historical Milestones

1967

  • The GlenAllachie distillery, designed by William Delmé-Evans and built by Mackinlay McPherson, begins construction. It features an innovative gravity-fed design to minimize energy use. The first production run occurs in 1968.

2017

  • Industry legend Billy Walker, along with Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson, acquires the distillery from Chivas Brothers, bringing extensive expertise to the team.

2018

  • The first core range of single malts is launched, marking the distillery's debut in the single malt market after primarily contributing to premium blends.

2019

  • The Visitor Centre opens on the first day of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, featuring a whisky bar, tasting lounge, outdoor seating, and various tours and experiences.

2021

  • Billy Walker is inducted into Whisky Magazine's Hall of Fame. The GlenAllachie's 10-year-old Cask Strength wins World's Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards.

2022

  • Billy Walker celebrates 50 years in the Scotch whisky industry with the launch of The Past, Present & Future Series, commemorating his exceptional career.

2023

  • The GlenAllachie receives an SIETF grant for a decarbonization project, installing Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) technology and 134 solar panels to halve energy demand.

2024

  • The GlenAllachie unveils a new visual identity, reflecting its evolution while maintaining the award-winning quality of the whisky inside.

LEGENDARY MASTER DISTILLER

Billy Walker: Master Distiller

Billy Walker, the esteemed Master Distiller, leads The GlenAllachie Distillers Company with over 50 years of experience in the Scotch whisky industry. His extensive career across renowned brands has deeply influenced The GlenAllachie’s operations and ethos.

From Chemist to Icon

Billy's journey began in Dumbarton, a town known for whisky production, where his early passion for the industry flourished. He earned a BSc Honours Degree in Chemistry from The University of Glasgow in 1967, which laid the groundwork for his profound understanding of the whisky-making process, from production to flavour development and blending. Billy remarks, "The chemistry gives you a very complete understanding of what the building blocks are; the art gives you that touch and feel to capture the sweet point."

Becoming a Whisky Master

Billy's professional journey in whisky commenced in 1972 at Hiram Walker & Sons, the producers of Ballantine’s. He then moved on to roles at Inver House and Burn Stewart Distillers. In 2004, Billy co-founded The BenRiach Distillery Company, which eventually grew to include BenRiach, GlenDronach, and Glenglassaugh distilleries. His leadership was instrumental in revitalising these brands, leading them to great success.

The New Era

Since acquiring The GlenAllachie Distillery in 2017, Billy has revolutionised its single malt offerings. Previously used primarily in premium blends, The GlenAllachie gained recognition with the launch of its single malt brand in 2018. Billy's work has garnered numerous accolades, including the World’s Best Single Malt award at the World Whiskies Awards in 2021. He proudly states, “As an emerging single malt brand, we are not constrained by history. We have the freedom to pursue excellence without the handcuffs of reputation."

Billy Walker’s legacy is a testament to his dedication and passion for whisky, continually pushing the boundaries of the craft.

Ms. Ciara Hepburn: A Brief Biography

With over eight years of experience in the Scotch whisky industry, Ms. Ciara Hepburn has become a prominent figure in the field. She joined GlenAllachie in 2023, seizing the opportunity to be part of Billy Walker’s passionate team, dedicated to elevate the global recognition of the GlenAllachie distillery. Despite the brand's inception only seven years ago, GlenAllachie has made significant strides in the industry, and Ms. Hepburn plays a crucial role in this journey. Currently, she is responsible for sales and brand development across several key markets, including the APAC region, Germany, Japan, the Middle East, and South America. Her expertise and commitment continue to drive the brand’s success and expansion on a global scale.

Her favourite dram is the GlenAllachie 10-year-old. She loves the punchy cask strength whisky and the sherry/red wine/virgin oak is perfectly balanced

Guided by his half-century of experience, Master Distiller Billy Walker has implemented a philosophy of wood innovation and sourced the world’s finest casks to elevate the spirit to its optimum, delivering a truly exceptional single malt.

Created from a combination of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry puncheons along with a small quantity of Virgin Oak casks and red wine barriques, the resulting bronze spirit delivers sherry-matured sophistication. Abundant with classic Speyside heather honey and butterscotch notes, balanced perfectly with sweet spices and hints of stem ginger, this creation truly represents the character of GlenAllachie.

It’s now almost two years since The GlenAllachie Distillers Company was formed, bringing the distillery back into private ownership. In that time, they have opened a Visitor’s Centre, added two warehouses, grown from seven to 21 employees and their GlenAllachie and MacNair’s whiskies are now recognised as outstanding malts, receiving numerous medals and awards across both ranges.

It’s now time for them to expand the GlenAllachie core range and showcase more of what their whisky has to offer. The Master Distiller, Billy Walker, has been working tirelessly on this new expression since day one; evaluating casks and refining recipes to create something special. They’re proud to present the jewel in their crown; the GlenAllachie 15 years old.

When GlenAllachie first rebooted, Master Distiller Billy Walker immediately set to work putting his fingerprint on our whisky; Scottish barley, 100 hour fermentation, slow distillation.

As a blender for over 50 years the warehouses is where Billy really comes into his own though. Working across our 16 warehouses holding casks dating back to the 1970’s, Billy has selected a limited parcel of casks to be released as GlenAllachie 18yo. The signature GlenAllachie rich, robust spirit, the heather and butterscotch notes balanced by extra years in cask.

Following in the footsteps of its acclaimed predecessors, most notably Batch 4 which was awarded ‘World’s Best Single Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards 2021, they are proud to introduce Batch 8 of The GlenAllachie 10-year-old Cask Strength.

Carefully crafted by Master Blender Billy Walker, who this year celebrates five decades in the whisky industry, this release is the epitome of the art of wood management. A marriage of whisky from a combination of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry puncheons, along with a small quantity of Virgin Oak and Rioja casks, the resulting liquid is bursting with indulgent notes of tangy orange, rich mocha and sweet spices. Presented at natural cask strength of 57.2% ABV, without chill-filtration and at natural colour to showcase the whisky in its purest form.
