Introduction to the Left Bank Of Bordeaux

Left Bank wines are generally blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon as the dominant grape, while Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc are used as a supporting grape variety. Left Bank wines tend to be more acidic and tannic in their youth. They mature into mesmerising and delicious wines over time.

Together with Malt & Wine Asia, we are bringing you 5 different wines from different wineries to “Discover the Left Bank of Bordeaux”. The Left Bank includes the Médoc and Haut Médoc wine regions, which encompass some of the highest-rent districts in the wine world. This is where the most recognised and world-renowned Bordeaux appellations are located, such as Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Margaux.

Information about the Left Bank Of Bordeaux

The Left Bank wine-making region encompasses the area directly south of the Garonne river. The Left Bank also encompasses the Médoc wine region north of Bordeaux City.

There are several classification systems at play. The most important on the Left Bank is the official 1855 Classification of the Médoc, which was drawn up for Emperor Napoleon III as part of the Exposition Universelle de Paris celebrations that year.

Left Bank terroir is mostly flat with gravel topsoil and limestone underneath. Wines typically have more tannin and a bigger overall structure than their Right Bank counterparts, which generally comprise a limestone surface with less gravel and more clay.
