Table Of Contents

Old World Rioja Revolution

3 types of Rioja Red Wines and 1 Rioja White Wine category:

  1. Traditional Rioja- Usually long aging in American Oak Barrels which results in an exotic and savoury character.

  2. Modern Classical Rioja- Usually younger wines that are aged in a mixture of American/French Oak Barrels.

  3. Modern- Shorter aging in New French Oak Barrels

  4. Rioja Blanco (White)- Generally Light, fresh flavours with little body and high acidity.

Rioja Classification Rules

1.Joven - No oak aging.

2.Crianza -1 year oak aging and 1 year aging in the bottle minimum.

3.Reserva -1 year oak aging and 2 year aging in the bottle minimum.

4.Grand Reserva -2 years oak aging and 3 years aging in the bottle minimum.

However, it should also be noted that these regulations are not strictly enforced and it is up to each bodegas to appropriately label their wines. In this instance, free market demand forces dictates which bodegas succeed and fail, and hence there is a strong incentivization for every bodegas to appropriately label and market their wines. The lack of official enforcement cuts both ways; bodegas and wineries can afford to be more creative in creating/curating their unique style of Rioja Wines but it can also allow for a lackadaisical approach.
