Rodney Strong California Chardonnay 2021
Rodney Strong California Chardonnay 2021
Grape Varietal: Chardonnay
Appellation: California (Sonoma, Monterey, Santa Barbara)
In an unwavering commitment to quality, weโre proud to present Rodney Strongโs California Chardonnay which features pristine fruit from cooler, coastal regions of California where Chardonnay thrives and displays its alluring and unique flavours and aromas.
Advances in viticulture outside of Sonoma and Napa in recent years have resulted in higher quality grapes. By incorporating some of this fruit with their Sonoma County grapes, Rodney Strong has created a better, more complex wine showing the diversity and balance of California Chardonnay regions.
THE VINTAGE AND VINEYARD
The 2021 vintage turned out to be a fantastic growing season, with no frost and very mild temperatures throughout most of the year. However, the unpredictable spring rains ended in March in what would become one of the driest seasons on record in Sonoma County. In Monterey County, due to much less rain and more wind, the grapes ripen later and take on more tropical tones.
The cooler Santa Barbara County vineyard lends a twist of citrusy flavour and golden apple, adding complexity to this Chardonnay which showcases these three great appellations.
TASTING
Rodney Strong barrels fermented 60% of their California Chardonnay and aged that portion in French oak barrels, stirring the lees every month to lend a creaminess to the mouthfeel and a touch of spice and vanilla to the flavours. The remainder was cold-fermented in stainless steel to heighten the fresh tropical and citrusy fruit.
This vintage displays aromas of lemon curd and apple with hints of toasty oak and baking spices. The finish is long and lingering with silky notes of fresh pear and pineapple.
Rodney Strong Chalk Hill Chardonnay 2019
Rodney Strong Chalk Hill Chardonnay 2019
Grape Varietal: Chardonnay
Appellation: Chalk Hill
In 1965, founder, Rod Strong, was the first to plant Chardonnay in what would later be recognised as the Chalk Hill American Viticultural Area (AVA), established officially in 1983. He recognised the region as distinct from the rest of Russian River Valley for its unique volcanically derived, chalky white ash soils, which impart a subtle mineral character to wines grown there.
THE VINTAGE AND VINEYARD
2019 was another fantastic vintage in California. In Sonoma County, it started with a copious amount of rain saturating the soil in late winter and early spring. Early summer heat waves acclimated the vines to warmer weather, which allowed the grapes to withstand a later heat spell in August, moving the sugars higher and allowing flavours to ripen.
TASTING
Lemon pie and custard aromas mix with exotic quince and layers of creamy oak in our 2019 Chalk Hill Chardonnay. Bright green apple and a citrusy lemon kick balance out the smooth oak tones. The creamy mouthfeel leads to a bright finish of grapefruit zest and hints of tart apple.
Rodney Strong Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2019
Rodney Strong Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2019
Grape Varietal: Pinot Noir
Appellation: 90% Russian River Valley, 5% Petaluma Gap, 5% Sonoma County
Rod Strong was among the first modern wine pioneers with a vision to plan Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley. In 1968, he planted their heritage River East Vineyard in the alluvial clay-loam soils adjacent to the winery in Healdsburg.
Today, the Russian River Valley is well established as one of the premier Pinot Noir growing regions in the world, and Rodney Strong continue to rely on the original River East Vineyard as a core contributor to our estate vineyard bottling.

TASTING
The 2019 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir has deep aromas of plum, brown sugar and baked fruit. Warm and richly inviting, the tannins are present in the mid palate and melt on the finish. This vintage is uniquely earthy and complex with notes of tobacco, baked cherry pie and spice.
Rodney Strong Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Rodney Strong Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Grape Varietals: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 4% Zinfandel, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec, 1% Petite Sirah, 1% Syrah
Appellation: Sonoma County
Rodney Strong recognised in the late 1960s that Sonoma Countyโs Alexander Valley was an exceptional area for heat loving Cabernet Sauvignon. He planted the first Cabernet vineyard in 1971, Alexanderโs Crown, on a small hill in Jimtown, and the reputation for fine Sonoma County Cabernet has never looked back. Today they have three exceptional Cabernet vineyards, from Jimtown to Geyserville, and all the way north to Cloverdale, planted in the well-drained alluvial, volcanic, and uplifted shale/sandstone soils that make Sonoma County an ideal place for this noble grape.

With all things in balance, harvest took place September 27 - November 2.
TASTING
Our 2019 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is rich with dark cherry, plum and baking spices. The delicious fruit is accompanied by black pepper notes, crushed violet and cassis. The palate has medium tannins, lingering spicy oak flavours with a velvety lush finish.

IN THE CELLAR
Symmetry is made in a small lot winemaking facility called the Artisan Cellar. Under the direction of Greg Morthole, Rodney Strong employ artisan techniques such as cluster pre-sorting, berry sorting and extended maceration. With small tanks and equipment sized for the most discriminating vineyard selection process, this facility is truly state-of-the-art and represents the Klein family commitment to producing the finest Symmetry possible.
THE VINTAGE
The 2015 Vintage was warm overall, but cooler than the previous years. With bud break occurring weeks ahead of average, lower yields led to sugars accumulating much faster in the clusters than the speed at which ripening was occurring. Cool and warm weather alternated the rest of the Summer. The acidity and tannins in the berries remained firm even with the possibility of a record early harvest date. Their winemakers waited for the acids to lower and for the tannins to soften while the sugar continued to climb. We picked blocks from five different vineyards in Alexander Valley, plus our estate Cooley Ranch Vineyard out in the wild hills north of Lake Sonoma, all the way through September.
The 2015 Symmetry has luxurious aromas of red fruits, plum, vanilla, dusty oak and dried fruit which unfold on the palate with silky layers of dark fruits, baking spices and a supple rich mouthfeel. This wine is harmonius and elegant with refined tannins and a long, lingering finish. Great cellaring potential for enjoyment in years to come.
